Hyundai Ioniq 9 Outshines Volvo EX90 in Influential German Review
Outstanding Spatial Flexibility and High Powertrain Scores
The Ioniq 9, the flagship electrified luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) from Hyundai Motor Company, has outperformed the large electric SUV Volvo EX90 in an automotive evaluation conducted in Germany.
The leading German automotive magazine "Auto Motor und Sport" evaluated the Ioniq 9 and Volvo EX90 in seven categories: body, safety, convenience, powertrain, driving performance, environmental friendliness, and economy.
The Ioniq 9 scored a total of 572 points, surpassing the Volvo EX90 by a margin of 17 points, as the latter scored 555 points. This remarkable lead was achieved thanks to the Ioniq 9's excellent performance in body and powertrain categories.
Auto Motor und Sport gave high marks to the Ioniq 9’s spacious and comfortable interior, describing it as a "versatile luxury SUV that can comfortably accommodate six passengers," and noting that it offered a wider and more pleasant cabin than the comparison model.
In particular, the magazine praised the Ioniq 9’s outstanding spatial flexibility, highlighting its ability to fold the third-row seats in just a few seconds using an electronic switch, its massive maximum cargo space of up to 2,494 liters, and powered leg rests for second-row seats.
The Ioniq 9’s user interface was also highly rated, with the publication recognizing the intuitive operation through physical buttons and switches, fast and logically organized infotainment menus, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, and regenerative braking control with steering wheel paddles.
As for the powertrain, the Ioniq 9 earned positive reviews for its powerful acceleration—covering 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds—while also providing a smooth driving feel, demonstrating its ability to balance both performance and ride comfort. Advanced convenience features, such as a UV-C sterilization storage compartment, active road noise control, a Bose sound system, and essential connectivity services for charging route guidance, were all evaluated positively as well.
The Ioniq 9 has also been recognized for its outstanding safety, earning the highest five-star (★★★★★) rating in the Euro NCAP, as well as the "Top Safety Pick Plus" grade in the crash safety assessment by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
