[Click eStock]"Coinbase Expected to See Continued Short-Term Earnings Volatility"
There is an analysis suggesting that short-term earnings volatility will continue for Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, which posted weak results in the second quarter of this year.
According to Shinhan Investment Corp. on August 4, Coinbase reported revenue of $1.22 billion in the second quarter, a 19% decrease compared to the same period last year, and turned to an adjusted net loss of $0.40 per share. Kim Yumin, a researcher at Shinhan Investment Corp., stated, “Spot cryptocurrency trading volume fell by 25% quarter-on-quarter, market capitalization fell by 11%, and the volatility index declined by 14%,” adding, “Trading revenue declined to $600 million, with both retail (-20%) and institutional (-26%) segments posting decreases.”
On the other hand, the exchange’s market share in trading volume reached an all-time high of 10.3% for a third consecutive quarter, with share expanding in both spot and derivatives. Prediction market revenue more than doubled, rising by 106% quarter-on-quarter, scaling up to a run-rate of over $100 million. Kim explained, “Seasonal factors such as the NBA playoffs and the World Cup, along with the launch of new crypto binary products, contributed to this growth.”
Subscription and services revenue fell by 5% quarter-on-quarter to $555 million, coming in 6.6% below expectations. Kim pointed out, “Weaker USDC interest and staking revenue were the main causes,” and added, “Adjusted expenses dropped by 9% quarter-on-quarter to $1.03 billion, coming in below the midpoint of guidance.”

Coinbase shares remain significantly below their July 2023 peak of $444 and have recently been fluctuating within the $150-$170 range. Until a sustained recovery in the cryptocurrency market is confirmed, a conservative approach is advised. Kim concluded, “It is positive that new business revenue contributions are becoming more visible, but since the majority of total revenue is still tied to the cryptocurrency market, short-term earnings volatility is expected to continue. For valuation justification, a recovery in cryptocurrency market activity or further confirmation of expanded new business revenue contributions will be necessary.”
