Korea Structural Safety Develops Innovative Drainage Method to Prevent Retaining Wall Collapse Risk from “Water” at a Fraction of Traditional Costs
Poor Drainage During Heavy Rain Is a Major Cause of Reinforced Earth Retaining Wall Collapse
Patent Developed for Drainage Method Applicable to Existing Walls
Due to the recent frequent heavy rainfall, the importance of drainage management for reinforced earth retaining walls has been increasing. On August 3, Korea Structural Safety announced that it has developed a new drainage method that can also be applied to existing retaining walls.
Experts explain that reinforced earth retaining walls can face structural risks if the passageways for water—much like blood vessels in humans—become blocked. In particular, the appearance of white stains (efflorescence) or persistent water marks on the retaining wall’s surface can signal a decline in its internal drainage function, meaning inspection is necessary.
When rainwater seeps behind a reinforced earth retaining wall during heavy downpours and is not adequately drained, the internal water pressure increases and exerts a greater force pushing the wall outward. During this process, soil and water together put pressure on the structure, heightening the risk of deformation or collapse. In fact, it is known that a significant number of domestic reinforced earth retaining wall collapses have occurred before or after periods of heavy rainfall, underscoring the importance of drainage management.
The most effective way to solve drainage problems is to install drainage holes that channel water away from the interior of the retaining wall to the outside. However, for already completed reinforced earth retaining walls, drilling holes in the wall can cause the internal soil to collapse or make it difficult to insert drainage pipes, making practical implementation nearly impossible. As a result, many sites have had no realistic alternative but to opt for full-scale reconstruction or major reinforcement works, both of which can cost hundreds of millions of won.
To address these issues, Korea Structural Safety has recently developed a patented drainage method that can be applied even to existing reinforced earth retaining walls.
This new method features a double-pipe structure in which, from the front of the retaining wall, an external pipe is inserted, and then soil and gravel inside are removed. Afterward, a special drainage pipe is installed that allows water to pass through while filtering out soil.
In particular, this method can be selectively applied only to sections displaying signs such as water stains or efflorescence on the wall’s surface, where drainage is needed. As a result, it reduces unnecessary construction and significantly lowers costs. It is being recognized as a new maintenance method that restores drainage function and reduces the risk of collapse without having to reconstruct the entire wall.
Korea Structural Safety has also developed a patented preventive drainage method for newly constructed reinforced earth retaining walls. This method involves pre-installing drainage facilities at various points within the wall structure to channel rainwater away from multiple locations. Its main feature is to prevent water pressure from concentrating in specific sections during heavy rainfall, thereby enhancing the long-term structural safety of the walls.
This provides local governments and public institutions, which must manage with limited disaster safety budgets, with an effective and realistic option for targeted interventions in retaining walls at risk of collapse.
Experts predict that the maintenance paradigm for reinforced earth retaining walls will shift from post-incident recovery to a focus on preventative measures in the future.
A representative from Korea Structural Safety stated, "In the past, it was common to spend hundreds of millions of won for reinforcement or reconstruction when problems occurred with a retaining wall. From now on, it will become more important to restore drainage function in the early stages when warning signals appear, thus adopting a maintenance approach that emphasizes accident prevention."

Meanwhile, Korea Structural Safety is running a free "Self-Diagnosis Retaining Wall Safety" service on its website that is easily accessible to the general public. By offering a simple checklist for cracks, efflorescence, water marks, deformation, and other major warning signs on the wall surface, the service enables facility managers as well as ordinary citizens to easily check the safety status of retaining walls.
