Korean Air Partners with Archer on Military AAM, Laying Groundwork for Future Defense Industry Growth
Cooperation for Localization, Technology Partnership, and Securing Airworthiness Certification
Korean Air is set to actively pursue its ‘Military Advanced Air Mobility (AAM)’ project by partnering with Archer Aviation, a leading U.S. company in next-generation electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
On August 3, Korean Air announced that it would establish a Korea-U.S. defense technology collaboration model covering military conversion based on internationally proven civilian AAM airframes, phased localization of key technologies, securing global airworthiness certification, and export strategies.
The military AAM sector is highly competitive among major countries worldwide, as these platforms are expected to become critical assets on future battlefields for missions including transport, medical evacuation, search and rescue, and special operations support.
Given the unique terrain of the country, with many mountainous and island regions requiring rapid deployment of supplies and personnel, the need to secure military AAM assets has been repeatedly emphasized.
This initiative will involve bringing in Archer’s AAM airframe ‘Midnight’, which has been validated by the U.S. Air Force, and adapting and integrating it for use by the Korean military. Korean Air will oversee the military conversion and system integration, while Archer will support airframe technology cooperation and airworthiness certification.
Particularly, if the project is selected for the Defense Acquisition Program Administration’s (DAPA) ‘Rapid Demonstration Program’, technology development and military operational validation are expected to accelerate. Both companies plan to build a domestic component supply chain and expand collaboration with other enterprises through a staged localization roadmap, helping to foster the military AAM ecosystem in Korea.
The Rapid Demonstration Program is a system designed to swiftly apply private-sector new technologies to the national defense sector. If selected, companies can proceed with the development and testing of weapon system prototypes without requiring a formal ‘requirement’ decision in the force acquisition process, allowing for prompt validation of operational effectiveness through performance tests.
The FAA airworthiness certification data package provided by Archer in the course of military AAM development may be used to establish Korea’s standards for AAM airworthiness certification.
The project also has significant export potential. Korean Air and Archer are reviewing a cooperative model that leverages their technological partnership and phased localization as a foundation for exports to third countries. It is also being considered as a potential Korea-U.S. strategic defense industry cooperation model to lead the global military AAM market.

A Korean Air Aerospace Division official stated, “Developing military AAM is a blue ocean opportunity for Korea to secure leadership in next-generation airpower and the future aviation industry,” adding, “By strengthening Korea-U.S. technological cooperation, we will seize the golden opportunity and establish a next-generation defense export model.”
