Kwon Youngjin Says "I Will Not Voluntarily Leave the Party" Amid Collar-Grabbing Controversy
"Willing to Accept Proper Disciplinary Action from the Ethics Committee"
Kwon Youngjin, a member of the People Power Party, stated regarding the party leadership's recommendation for him to voluntarily leave the party due to the "collar-grabbing controversy," "I will never leave the party on my own accord."
On August 1, Assemblyman Kwon apologized again to his fellow People Power Party members and others in a text message, saying, "I apologize for causing concern and worry with my recent actions," and adding, "Failing to control my emotions in the moment and behaving inappropriately is entirely my fault and inexcusable."
On July 23, Assemblyman Kwon strongly protested during the allocation of standing committees for the latter half of the National Assembly session, grabbing Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik by the collar and causing controversy. On July 27, the People Power Party’s Supreme Council recommended that Kwon voluntarily leave the party. On the same day, the party’s ethics committee also began disciplinary proceedings against him.
He stated, "I believe that anyone who does something wrong must take appropriate responsibility and accept proper disciplinary action. To take responsibility, I have already resigned as head of the Daegu City Party Committee and as secretary of the National Assembly’s Public Administration and Security Committee. If the ethics committee decides on a fair and appropriate penalty, I will accept it."
However, he made it clear that he could not accept the recommendation to leave the party. He emphasized, "Since the Hannara Party era in 1999, I have never once left the party in 27 years," adding, "For me, the party is not a temporary refuge but the center of my political life and, essentially, my entire life."

He continued, "I have spent difficult days regretting that my momentary mistake has severely damaged the image of the party and given those seeking to lead the party astray an excuse. I will return to my original intentions and devote myself to politics for the people, the party, and for Daegu and Dalseobyeong."
