Chinese Defense Minister Vows to Firmly Thwart Attempts at Taiwanese Independence
Remarks at PLA Founding Anniversary Event
"We Will Firmly Defend National Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity"
The Chinese Minister of National Defense has once again emphasized that China will not tolerate moves toward Taiwanese independence or any military intervention by external forces.
According to Xinhua News Agency on August 1, Dong Jun, Chinese Minister of National Defense, stated at a reception in Beijing held the previous day to commemorate the 99th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), "We will resolutely thwart any attempt to split off 'Taiwan independence' in any form, as well as any external military intervention." He also stressed that China would continue to promote the modernization of its national defense and armed forces and strengthen advanced combat capabilities to address national security needs.
Minister Dong further stated, "We will firmly safeguard national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity," and added, "The People's Liberation Army will serve as a strong strategic pillar for the complete reunification of the motherland." He continued, "We will not forget the fundamental mission of the People's Army, will strengthen both military-government and military-civilian unity, and will maintain close ties with the people."
