Heat Wave Emergency Warnings Issued for Jeonnam, Gyeongbuk, and Gyeongnam Regions
On August 1, heat wave advisories were in effect across most areas of the country, as the temperature in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province, soared to 41.6 degrees Celsius, setting a new all-time high in the history of meteorological observation in South Korea.
This surpassed the previous day's 41.4 degrees measured in Yangsan, making it the highest temperature ever recorded in the 122-year history of meteorological records in the country.

View original imageOn this day, the temperature in Yangsan first reached 40 degrees at 12:14 p.m., then continued to rise to 41.6 degrees Celsius. Based on the 97 climate statistics observation stations officially managed by the Korea Meteorological Administration since 1904, this is the highest figure ever recorded.
The previous highest temperature was 41.4 degrees, recorded the day before in Yangsan. Prior to this year, the record high was 41.0 degrees, measured in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province, on August 1, 2018.
There is a possibility that the temperature in Yangsan may rise even further. Generally, the highest temperatures of the day are typically recorded between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
As of 1 p.m. on this day, a high-level heat wave alert was in effect in Jeonnam, North Gyeongsang, and South Gyeongsang regions. Major cities in South Gyeongsang Province reported temperatures of 39.8 degrees in Onsan (Ulsan), 39.7 degrees in Gimhae, 39.4 degrees in Buk-gu, Busan, 39.0 degrees in Changwon, and 38.9 degrees in Hapcheon.
In North Gyeongsang Province, temperatures reached 39.2 degrees in Gampo (Gyeongju), 37.8 degrees in both Yeongdeok and Guryongpo (Pohang), and 37.7 degrees in Goryeong. In the Jeonnam region, temperatures were recorded at 38.0 degrees in Gwangyang-eup, 37.9 degrees at Yeosu Airport, and 37.4 degrees in Beolgyo (Boseong).

The Korea Meteorological Administration stated, "Throughout most regions nationwide, the maximum perceived temperature will remain around 35 degrees for the time being," and urged, "Please take special care of your health and refer to forthcoming weather updates."
