The Jo Eunsuk Special Investigation Team for Insurrection Cases has transferred the case of Seongjae Park, former Minister of Justice, who was acquitted in the first trial on charges of accepting a request to halt the investigation into First Lady Kim Keonhee, to the second General Special Investigation Team led by Changyoung Kwon.
On the 31st, the Special Investigation Team for Insurrection Cases announced, "Yesterday, we transferred the case of defendant Seongjae Park's alleged violation of the Anti-Graft Act to the General Special Investigation Team."
Former Minister Park was brought to trial on charges of accepting an illicit request from the First Lady, asking him to look into the background and progress of the investigation into the luxury bag bribe scandal, and instructing an affiliated public official to check and report on the confidential investigation status.
The Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 33 (Chief Judge Lee Jinkwan) ruled last month to dismiss the case regarding these charges. The judgment stated that Park's Telegram messages—which were key to the investigation—and the specific connection between martial law and crimes of insurrection and treason were insufficient, so the case did not fall within the scope of the Special Investigation Act for Insurrection Cases.

The Special Investigation Team for Insurrection Cases initially filed an appeal regarding the overall first-instance verdict, but, after review, withdrew the appeal on the Anti-Graft Act violation charges that were dismissed. The team explained, "This case falls under Item 13, Article 2, Paragraph 1 of the General Special Prosecution Act, and has therefore been transferred to the General Special Investigation Team in accordance with Article 256 of the Criminal Procedure Act (transfer to another competent authority)."
