Woori Asset Management's 'US Short-term Bond IPO Fund' Surpasses 500 Billion Won in Net Assets
High Expectations for Second-Half IPOs
Woori Asset Management announced on the 31st that the net assets of the Woori US Short-term Bond IPO Securities Investment Trust (Bond Mix) Fund have surpassed 500 billion won.
According to fund evaluation firm KG Zeroin, as of the 29th, the one-year return (KRW basis) of the US short-term bond IPO fund's unhedged class (UH) was 10.54%. The six-month return was also robust at 3.16%. In a volatile market environment, the hedged class (H), which eliminates currency risk, delivered a one-year return of 4.79%.
The US short-term bond IPO fund employs a 'hybrid strategy' that seeks stable carry (interest) income from short-term bonds while generating excess returns by participating in global Initial Public Offerings (IPOs). Leveraging its partnership with global asset management company Neuberger Berman, it strengthens its deal sourcing (investment sourcing) competitiveness and focuses investments on high-quality stocks that are undervalued relative to their corporate value at the IPO price. The fund actively participates not only in US IPOs but also in markets such as Hong Kong, Japan, and Europe.
Recently, as volatility has increased in both stock and bond markets, strategies focused on pursuing additional profit opportunities based on stable interest income have garnered attention. The inflow of 100 billion won in just over two months reflects this trend.
Jeong Ji-yoon, team leader of the Global Management Team 2 at Woori Asset Management, stated, "There is significant interest from investors who wish to manage their assets stably over a long period, such as those with retirement pensions," and added, "The fund is being positively evaluated because it secures portfolio stability through US short-term bonds, while also selectively investing in newly listed global companies with strong growth potential, thereby creating opportunities for returns."
The US IPO market has been active recently. Following the listing of SpaceX in June, major IPOs such as Cerebras Systems and SK hynix American Depositary Receipts (ADR) attracted USD 118.6 billion (about KRW 173 trillion) in capital.
The US short-term bond IPO fund participated in the SpaceX listing, receiving an allocation equivalent to approximately 0.6% of the fund's assets, and also took part in the IPO of SG Micro, a Chinese analog semiconductor company that had a secondary listing in Hong Kong. Recently, the fund secured a 1.2% allocation in the SK hynix ADR IPO.
Jeong commented, "It is not just about the success of individual IPOs, but also confirmation that investors continue to positively assess long-term growth sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and the space industry. This is also interpreted as a signal that investors remain optimistic about the market, thereby dispelling concerns that mega IPOs would drain market liquidity and proving that new investment demand can be created."

There are high expectations for the forthcoming IPOs of OpenAI and Anthropic scheduled for the second half of the year. Jeong continued, "If these companies present a convincing path towards future revenue growth and profitability improvements, it is expected to lower the psychological burden for investors and lead to successful IPO subscriptions. This will also likely provide additional opportunities for returns to the US short-term bond IPO fund."
