[Click eStock] "Xperix Sees Significant Growth in Patent Monetization Business... Benefiting from Global Semiconductor Patent Disputes"
There is an analysis that Xperix (317770) has secured a new growth engine, driven by the growth of its subsidiary Intellectual Discovery (ID)'s intellectual property (IP) business. In particular, as global semiconductor patent disputes are expanding and ID's consolidation as a subsidiary is underway, expectations are rising for an increase in corporate value.
On July 31, independent research firm ValueFinder released a report analyzing that Intellectual Discovery has become a key growth axis for Xperix by recording its highest ever performance based on its patent monetization business. The report also noted that the planned consolidation of ID as a subsidiary through increased equity using convertible bonds is expected to have a positive impact on future earnings improvement.
Xperix is a digital identity verification solutions company that was established in 2017 via a physical spin-off from Suprema and was listed on KOSDAQ in 2019. As of the first quarter of this year, biometric solutions accounted for 55.0% of its revenue, and electronic document solutions for 9.8%. The company supplies fingerprint recognition and electronic passport solutions to domestic public institutions as well as to over 133 countries worldwide, including France, Singapore, and South Africa.
Last year, the company’s separate financial statements showed sales of 19.9 billion won, up 37.5% from the previous year, and since the fourth quarter, quarterly operating income turned positive, indicating that profitability in its core business has been restored.
The market is focusing on Intellectual Discovery, which Xperix holds a 28.11% stake in, as a key growth driver. Intellectual Discovery, established in 2010 as the first domestic patent management specialist firm (NPE) with investments from public agencies and leading Korean companies such as Samsung, SK, and LG, engages in the monetization of intellectual property spanning patent licensing, transactions, and patent finance.
Intellectual Discovery posted its largest-ever results last year, with sales of 47.8 billion won and operating income of 11.3 billion won. This year, in the first quarter alone, it achieved sales of 23.8 billion won and operating income of 15.5 billion won, already surpassing last year’s annual operating income.
Investment results are also becoming visible. Since 2019, Intellectual Discovery has invested in FuriosaAI four times, and as FuriosaAI was valued at over 3 trillion won in its Series D round this year, the value of ID’s shares has also increased. Additionally, by selling VVC video codec standard patents, the company earned about 15 billion won last year, further demonstrating its competitive edge in the patent business.
Xperix is pushing to expand its stake in Intellectual Discovery to reinforce its growth engines. In May, the company issued its seventh convertible bond worth 10 billion won and, including the previously raised 15.5 billion won from the sixth convertible bond, plans to invest a total of 25.5 billion won in acquiring additional shares of Intellectual Discovery. With this, Xperix aims to increase its shareholding—currently at 28.11%—and consolidate ID as a subsidiary.
Intellectual Discovery is also seeing progress in global patent disputes. In 2021, the company won a damages verdict of approximately 18.1 billion won in a USB patent lawsuit against Kingston Technology in the U.S. Since then, it has expanded its patent licensing business targeting mobile communication, standard-essential patents, and global big tech companies.
Over the past six years, the cumulative scale of IP monetization has exceeded 100 million dollars, with roughly 80% of this arising from patent litigation and licensing. Currently, the company is pursuing lawsuits related to voice recognition and GPU ray tracing patents against global conglomerates, so as global semiconductor and related patent disputes continue to increase, further revenue-generating opportunities are expected to expand.

Lee Chungheon, a researcher at ValueFinder, stated, "Intellectual Discovery has demonstrated its capacity for IP monetization by surpassing last year’s annual operating income in just one quarter," adding, "As consolidation via convertible bond-driven equity expansion becomes visible, the more the global semiconductor patent dispute issue comes to the fore, the more positive the impact will be on Xperix’s corporate value."
