LG Display to Invest 3 Trillion Won in Next-Generation OLEDs...1.5 Trillion Won Supported by National Growth Fund
Securing an "Ultra-Gap" in OLED Technology with Own Funds Included
Moving Beyond Quantitative Expansion to Premium and High Value-Added Transformation
LG Display is set to launch a proactive investment totaling 3 trillion won to secure a technological lead in next-generation organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology and to cement its dominance in the premium market.
On July 30, LG Display announced that it has been selected as a recipient of support under the 'OLED Ultra-Gap Project' within the government's 'Secondary Mega Project' of the National Growth Fund, securing 1.5 trillion won in long-term, low-interest funding. LG Display will match this with an additional 1.5 trillion won from its own resources, injecting a total of 3 trillion won. By leveraging government financing, the company aims to minimize the financial burden and costs associated with sourcing large-scale capital, while establishing infrastructure for next-generation technologies.
This investment is focused not simply on expanding production capacity, but on a qualitative restructuring to secure advanced OLED technology. The funds secured will be used to establish facilities that apply differentiated premium technologies—such as low power consumption and reduced thickness. LG Display plans to strengthen its high-value-added profit structure, moving away from competition based on low prices and mass volume driven by aggressive Chinese supply and pricing strategies.
The global display market is on the verge of a 'golden cross,' indicating a paradigm shift from low-growth LCDs to premium OLEDs. In response, LG Display plans to drive the expansion of the OLED market across a range of applications— including TVs, IT devices, automotive displays, and gaming monitors—by leveraging its proprietary technological advantage in tandem OLED and low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology.
In addition, this investment is expected to contribute to job creation in the Gyeonggi Province, including Paju, and to strengthen a mutually beneficial ecosystem with domestic materials, parts, and equipment (so-called 'SoBuJang') companies.
