Kakao Pay Insurance Surpasses 10,000 Pet Insurance Contracts in Four Months
Early Enrollment Trend Noticeable for Pets Aged 0 to 3 Years
Kakao Pay Insurance announced on July 30 that its pet insurance surpassed a cumulative total of 10,000 contracts just four months after its launch.
According to an analysis of subscription data, there has been a notable demand from pet owners who sign up for insurance for their young pets to prepare for potential medical expenses due to illness or accidents.
By age group, 39% of enrolled pets were under 1 year old, accounting for the largest share, followed by 1-year-olds at 23%, 2-year-olds at 20%, and 3-year-olds at 18%. Among pets aged 0 to 3 years, the proportion of 0-year-old subscribers was the highest, indicating a clear tendency for pet owners to enroll pets at younger ages.
Subscribers most frequently chose coverage for surgeries with hospitalization, followed by surgeries with outpatient care, and then day-surgery coverage. The average amount paid in insurance claims to users was 308,408 won. The highest payout case was about 3.4 million won for the treatment of congenital portal systemic shunt disease.
Looking at the breakdown by pet type, dogs accounted for 80% of all enrollments, while cats made up 20%. Among dogs, the Maltipoo breed constituted the largest share at 28%, followed by Bichon Frise (16%), mixed breeds under 10 kg, Pomeranians, and Malteses.
Most of the top-enrolled dog breeds were small breeds, which are known to often require surgery for orthopedic conditions such as patellar luxation. As for cats, Korean Shorthair made up the largest share at 42%, followed by British Shorthair at 17%.
Kakao Pay Insurance launched its pet insurance in March 2026. The policy covers up to 5 million won per day for surgery and up to 40 million won per year. Coverage extends beyond surgical costs to include expenses for MRI and CT scans, hospitalization, outpatient care, and a wide range of medical costs frequently incurred during pet ownership.
One distinctive feature is that policyholders can file unlimited claims within the annual coverage limit. For a 30-year-old owner insuring a 1-year-old Maltese, the monthly premium is approximately 7,000 won for day-surgery or surgery-with-hospitalization coverage, and around 30,000 won for surgery plus outpatient treatment coverage.
Kakao Pay Insurance provides the "Kachichatgae" service, which allows users to share information with others nearby based on pet locations in case the pet goes missing. The company also offers content on pet health management and responsible pet care culture in collaboration with dog trainer Kang Hyungwook, delivering useful information for pet owners.

Jang Younggeun, CEO of Kakao Pay Insurance, said, "Despite the limitation that only pets aged 0 to 3 are eligible, achieving 10,000 contracts within four months of launch was possible due to strong interest and significant agreement on the necessity of such coverage among pet owners. We will continue to provide practical protection and services that genuinely support the daily lives of pet owners going forward.”
