Mayor Park Seungwon: "We Will Build a Signature Playground Where Children and Families Can Be Happy Together"
Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi Province, announced that Saseong Park in Cheolsan 1-dong will be transformed into a creative play space that children and families can enjoy together. The plan is to create a family-friendly playground that reflects the local characteristics, with participation from private companies, public interest organizations, and local residents.
On July 30, the city announced that Saseong Park in Cheolsan 1-dong has been finally selected as the site for the nationwide contest program 'Mom Pyeonhan Playground,' sponsored by Lotte Group and overseen by ChildFund Korea (Green Umbrella).
'Mom Pyeonhan Playground' is a flagship social contribution initiative that Lotte Group has been carrying out since 2017. In order to guarantee children’s right to play and to build safe yet creative play environments, the program invites local governments from across the nation to apply and supports the construction of open playgrounds tailored to each community.
Gwangmyeong City participated in the contest last June, passed an on-site inspection, and was selected as the final project site after receiving high marks for its project implementation capacity, site utilization, and plans for resident participation.
The project will target a children’s play facility of 130 square meters within Saseong Park. Rather than simply replacing outdated amenities, the facility will be newly developed as an experiential play space to foster children’s creativity and emotional development.
In particular, the project will incorporate ecological elements to reflect the park's proximity to Anyang Stream and will also create rest areas for families. The goal is to ensure that children of various ages, from infants to elementary school students, can use the playground together. The targeted completion date is the second half of 2026.
The project will be carried out through public-private collaboration. Gwangmyeong City, Lotte Group, and ChildFund Korea will sign an agreement to divide responsibilities. From the design stage, the views of residents and children will be actively incorporated through surveys, to create a playground tailored to the local community.
On July 28, the city held its first working-level meeting with Lotte Group, discussed the project timeline and detailed plans, and officially began preparations for the project.
