SM Bexel Internalizes Custom Battery Pack Design for Delivery Drones
SM Group's manufacturing affiliate, SM Bexel, has developed a battery pack optimized for delivery drones.
According to SM Bexel on July 29, this project was conducted in collaboration with VoloLand, a company specializing in drones. VoloLand had previously used Chinese-made battery packs for delivery drones. However, as the size and performance of these battery packs were not suitable for their own drones, they began developing custom products with SM Bexel, which possesses domestic battery pack manufacturing expertise.
VoloLand is a total drone solutions provider that manufactures and supplies drones, motors, and related equipment. The company has developed delivery drones for transporting food and goods to hard-to-reach locations such as campgrounds and mountainous areas and previously carried out a drone delivery pilot project in Ulju County, Ulsan.
Delivery drones require sufficient capacity for medium- and long-distance flights, as well as high output performance to stably maintain motor power during takeoff and landing. SM Bexel designed the size, capacity, voltage, and option specifications of the battery pack to reflect the structure and operational requirements of VoloLand’s drones, with a particular focus on ensuring stable performance in high-output conditions.
After completing development, the battery pack was installed in VoloLand’s delivery drones and underwent field tests in actual operational environments. The tests assessed voltage drop during flight, power consumption characteristics of each motor, and stability in high-output conditions. The drones equipped with the battery pack successfully completed approximately 1,000 normal flights.
Through this project, SM Bexel secured a supply reference for its self-developed battery pack being mounted and operated in delivery drones. Based on the results of the field tests, both companies are expanding their collaboration to develop smart drone battery packs for agricultural spraying.

An SM Bexel representative commented, “Since drones require different battery specifications depending on airframe size, payload, range, and motor output, custom design capabilities are crucial. Through this project, we have established a development system that implements appropriate size, capacity, voltage, and output specifications for customers’ airframes and verifies performance based on real flight data.”
