Joint MOU for Hybrid STATCOM Development
Accelerating Efforts to Lead Latin American Power Grid Stabilization Market
Hyosung Heavy Industries will supply ultra-high voltage transformers for a Brazilian hydropower project, targeting the power infrastructure market in Latin America.
On July 29, Hyosung Heavy Industries announced that it had secured an order, placed on July 28 (local time), for six 500kV ultra-high voltage transformers from Andritz Hydro, a Brazilian company specializing in hydropower and power generation facilities.
The ultra-high voltage transformers to be supplied are scheduled for installation at the “Foz do Areia” hydropower plant in Paraná state, Brazil.
Brazil ranks second globally in installed hydropower capacity and generates over 60 percent of its total electricity from hydropower.
To address rising electricity demand driven by recent industrial development, the government is currently moving to expand generation capacity on a large scale.
Andritz Hydro is a leading local provider of hydropower plant equipment and EPC services, responsible for more than 25 percent of Brazil’s hydropower capacity, and has established itself as a key partner for major Brazilian power companies over the past 30 years.
Hyosung Heavy Industries has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Andritz Hydro for the joint development of a “hybrid STATCOM” that integrates Hyosung’s STATCOM with Andritz Hydro’s synchronous condenser.
STATCOMs and synchronous condensers are core equipment for stabilizing voltage and frequency in power systems. They are particularly effective for controlling fluctuations in renewable energy generation, such as wind and solar power, due to variable weather conditions.
