NHK reported that a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck western Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan, on the afternoon of July 28, resulting in numerous injuries and fires. The exact number of injuries has not been determined.
Kyushu Electric Power stated that approximately 40,000 households experienced power outages due to the earthquake. According to Kyodo News, the runway at Kumamoto Airport was also closed. All railway operations, including the Shinkansen across Kyushu, were suspended.

The epicenter was located in the Kumamoto region of Kumamoto Prefecture, and the depth of the earthquake was estimated at 10 km. The earthquake registered a seismic intensity of 7 in Kumamoto City and surrounding areas, which is the highest level on the Japanese scale.
