GS Engineering & Construction Completes Key 'TBM Tunneling' Phase in Australia’s NEL Road Project

GS Engineering & Construction announced on July 28 that it has successfully completed tunneling works at the North East Link (NEL) road project in Melbourne, Australia, covering a total tunnel length of 6.5 kilometers. Two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) with a diameter of 15.6 meters each completed excavation in their respective tunnel sections and reached their designated end points.

View original imageThe NEL road project marks GS Engineering & Construction’s first entry into Australia's infrastructure construction market. The project connects the M80 Ring Road in Melbourne’s northeast with the Eastern Freeway, and includes the construction of an approximately 6.5-kilometer tunnel section along with connections to surface roads.
GS Engineering & Construction is participating in the project as an equity investor in the Spark Consortium and as a member of the joint venture responsible for design and construction. In 2021, the Victorian Government in Australia signed a public-private partnership (PPP) contract with the Spark Consortium for the NEL road project package.
The total project cost for the NEL road project package, in which GS Engineering & Construction is involved, was estimated at approximately 10.1 trillion won at the exchange rate at the time of the contract. Of this amount, GS Engineering & Construction’s share of the construction value is about 2.8 trillion won. This is the company's second largest overseas single project to date. The NEL road project attracted attention at the time of the contract as the largest road infrastructure PPP in the state of Victoria, Australia.
GS Engineering & Construction has been steadily advancing the NEL project in Australia, leveraging its extensive infrastructure construction experience and PPP capabilities accumulated both domestically and internationally. Following the completion of tunnel excavation, the company will proceed sequentially with subsequent phases, including the installation of road structures, electrical, lighting, and safety facilities inside the tunnel, and the construction of road connections, with the goal of opening the route by the end of 2028.
