Byungsam Kim, Mayor of Yeongcheon, Urges Cautious Approach to Korea Military Academy Plan... Calls for Active Utilization of the Korea Army Academy at Yeongcheon
Byungsam Kim, Mayor of Yeongcheon City, called for a cautious approach regarding the government's review of establishing the Korea Military Academy. He emphasized that any development strategy should be pursued in parallel with strengthening the existing infrastructure, particularly focusing on the Korea Army Academy at Yeongcheon.
Mayor Kim stated, "As this is a significant policy to overhaul the entire officer training system of Korea, a thorough public debate must precede any decision." He added, "Establishing a new system without utilizing Yeongcheon’s national defense education infrastructure, where the Korea Army Academy is located, requires careful consideration in terms of budget and policy efficiency."
He further pointed out that, in line with the goal of balanced national development, it is preferable to enhance existing national defense education bases rather than concentrating these functions in a single region.
In addition, Mayor Kim presented four key demands: ▲sufficient public discourse ▲strengthening the functions and status of the Korea Army Academy ▲fostering Yeongcheon as a hub for national defense education and defense science and technology ▲establishing a process to gather local opinions.
