"Only 7% Enjoy Sound Sleep"... Sleep Items for Quality Rest Gaining Popularity at Gwangju Shinsegae
Bedding and Mattress Sales Surge by Up to 70%
Customized Products Target Rising Summer Demand for Quality Sleep
With the combination of heatwaves, stress, and high humidity, "sound sleep" has emerged as a new consumer trend. As the domestic sleep industry has grown to a scale of 5 trillion won, Gwangju Shinsegae is also aiming to attract customers by highlighting products related to quality sleep, such as bedding and mattresses.
Gwangju Shinsegae Co., Ltd. announced on the 27th that it is showcasing a variety of sleep-enhancing items in the lifestyle section on the 8th floor of its main building.
According to the "2024 Korean Sleep Status Report" by the Korean Society of Sleep Research, only 7% of respondents said they experience sound sleep every day, which is about half the global average of 13%. Additionally, 60% of respondents reported experiencing sleep issues, citing psychological stress and other factors as the main causes.

In line with this trend, Gwangju Shinsegae is focusing on introducing a range of flagship sleep-related products, including bedding and mattresses.
In particular, the "The Chosun Hotel" bedding store on the 8th floor of the main building has shown notable growth, with first-half sales for 2026 (January to June) increasing by more than 70% compared to the same period last year. Its flagship product, the "Sage Wool Comforter Set," is distinctive for its natural wool's excellent breathability, effectively releasing moisture even during the rainy season to maintain a comfortable sleep environment.
Mattress brands have also demonstrated significant growth. Both Ace and Simmons, which are retailed at Gwangju Shinsegae, achieved over 150% of their sales targets in the first half of this year and recorded sales increases of more than 60% compared to the same period last year.
The flagship recommendation from Ace Bed, the "Royal Ace 60 Limited," employs a royal pillow top and Hybrid Z Spring, enhancing both cushioning and support, while reducing motion transfer and noise to help create an optimal sleep environment.
The popular "William" model from Simmons features a triple pocket spring structure that is designed to evenly distribute weight across different areas of the body, such as the waist and legs, thereby providing comfortable sleep support.
Kwon Hyukwon, head of lifestyle at Gwangju Shinsegae, stated, "Sound sleep has become a crucial factor that goes beyond simple rest and affects overall health. We will continue to introduce a variety of products so that our customers can create a more comfortable sleep environment with bedding and mattresses tailored to their needs."
