Han Roro to Release Korean Remake of "A Cruel Angel's Thesis"
Singer-songwriter Han Roro will be releasing a Korean-language cover of "A Cruel Angel's Thesis," the theme song from the Japanese animation "Neon Genesis Evangelion," SHgold Networks announced on July 27.
Han Roro is participating as the second featured artist in the "J-POP REMAKE" project, which was planned by singer and broadcaster Kangnam. This project reinterprets Japanese pop music with Korean artists' voices and musical styles. Following the first single, "Banquet Song," "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" will now be released as the second track.
"A Cruel Angel's Thesis" is a song released in 1995 by Japanese singer Yoko Takahashi. It served as the theme song for the TV animation "Neon Genesis Evangelion," which began airing the same year. More than 30 years since its release, the song continues to be regarded as one of Japan's most iconic anime themes and remains widely performed.
Han Roro performed this song at the 2024 music event "Wonder Rivet 2024." At the time, she showcased her own arrangement that preserved the original's rock sound to suit her vocal style. Through this project, she will officially release a Korean-language version as a single.
The project team explained, "Arrangements have been made to retain the original's energy and narrative while adding Han Roro's vocals and a modern rock style." The single will be released on July 30 at 6 PM.
