Bank of Korea Releases "Trends in Resident Foreign Currency Deposits for June 2026"
Last month, residents' foreign currency deposits in South Korea increased by USD 1.08 billion, marking a rise for the third consecutive month. The increase was mainly driven by customer deposits at securities firms and transaction payments by large corporations.
According to the "Trends in Resident Foreign Currency Deposits for June 2026" released by the Bank of Korea on July 27, resident foreign currency deposits at domestic foreign exchange banks at the end of last month stood at USD 113.33 billion, up by USD 1.08 billion from the end of the previous month.
Resident foreign currency deposits refer to deposits held in foreign currency by domestic individuals and companies, foreigners who have resided in Korea for more than six months, and foreign companies operating within Korea.
By currency, US dollar-denominated deposits increased by USD 2.25 billion, while euro and yen deposits decreased by USD 460 million and USD 410 million, respectively, compared to the previous month.
An official from the Bank of Korea explained, "The increase in US dollar deposits was led by higher customer deposits at securities firms, including margin deposits for listed derivatives and investor deposits for overseas securities, as well as transaction payments received by large corporations. On the other hand, yen deposits decreased due to transaction payments, and euro deposits declined as some companies repaid loans."
