Korea to Lead International Standards for Drone Cybersecurity
Professor Lee Jonghyuk of Sejong University Appointed as First Chair of ISO Working Group
Official Launch of International Standard Development for Drone Security
Professor Lee Jonghyuk, from the Department of Information Security at Sejong University, has been appointed as the inaugural chair of the Working Group 10 (WG10) on drone cybersecurity under the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). With the official launch of the international standard development for drone cybersecurity, as proposed by Korea, the country is set to take a leading role in discussions on the global standardization of drone cybersecurity.
On July 26, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that, at the 21st plenary session of the ISO Technical Committee on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (ISO/TC20/SC16) held in Brussels, Belgium on July 24, the establishment of the new working group on drone cybersecurity was approved. Professor Lee from Korea was named as the group’s first chair, and Korea’s proposed international standard “Cybersecurity Requirements for Drones (UAS) (ISO/AWI 26390)” has entered official development.
As the use of drones rapidly expands across national defense, public safety, logistics, and hobby activities, associated cybersecurity threats such as video information leakage, aircraft hacking, and disruption of location information are also increasing. The creation of this working group reflects a consensus among member countries on the need for international standards for drone cybersecurity. Korea has been pushing for the establishment of the working group since 2025 and is expected to lead future discussions on related international standardization.
At this plenary session, Korea also proposed eight new items for international standards in the drone field, including logistics drone operation procedures, radar sensor testing methods, and noise testing methods. These items will be put to a vote by member countries before being included in standardization work. The next ISO Technical Committee on Unmanned Aircraft Systems plenary session will be held in Seoul this coming November.

Kim Daeja, head of the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, said, “Out of the 26 international standards related to drones currently under development by ISO, Korea is leading the development of seven. This demonstrates the robust activities of our experts. We will actively support standardization efforts through events such as November’s plenary session in Seoul, enabling Korea to become a global leader in drone standards.”
