Yongsan District’s Solar Milepost Installation on Gyeongridan-gil Selected as Best Practice by Ministry of the Interior and Safety
Proposed Through Participatory Budgeting
Installed Along a 940-Meter Section
On July 26, Yongsan District in Seoul (District Mayor Kim Kyungdae) announced that its “Gyeongridan-gil Solar Milepost Installation Project for Accident Prevention and Local Landscape Improvement” has been selected as an outstanding case in the field of public safety in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s Participatory Budgeting Best Practices Competition.

The district, after consulting with traffic and public design experts and drafting a detailed plan, installed solar mileposts—ground lights powered by solar energy—along a 940-meter stretch of Gyeongridan-gil. These solar mileposts charge during the day and illuminate at night without the need for electrical wiring.
Gyeongridan-gil, adjacent to the neighborhoods of Itaewon and Namsan, is known for its high pedestrian traffic. However, some sections of the road have gradients and curves, making it difficult to distinguish between the sidewalk and the roadway at night. The district explained that the installation of the mileposts has clarified the road boundaries. This case will be featured in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s published collection of outstanding participatory budgeting cases.

District Mayor Kim Kyungdae stated, “This case is a meaningful achievement, as residents took part in solving local issues and brought about tangible change. We will continue to ensure that the participatory budgeting system is operated effectively, so that residents’ opinions lead to actual policy outcomes and Yongsan becomes a safer district that citizens can truly feel.”
