Man in His 40s Appeals After Assaulting Postal Worker and Hitting Police Officer With Car Before Fleeing

Only Three Days After Submitting Statement of Remorse

A man in his 40s, who was sentenced to prison for assaulting a postal delivery worker on duty and then hitting a responding police officer with his car before fleeing the scene, has appealed the verdict from the first trial.

According to legal sources on the 24th, the defendant, identified as Hwang, filed a notice of appeal with the Seoul Southern District Court the previous day. This came just two days after the first trial verdict and three days after he submitted his last written statement of remorse to the court. Previously, on the 21st, Judge Ko Cheolman of the Criminal Division 14 of the Seoul Southern District Court sentenced Hwang, who had been detained and indicted for obstruction of official duties and aggravated obstruction of official duties, to one year and two months in prison.

Hwang was put on trial on charges of assaulting a postal delivery worker waiting at a signal at the intersection near Ujangsan Station in Gangseo District, Seoul, last April, and then striking a responding police officer with his vehicle and fleeing for about two kilometers.

Through his remorse letters and similar statements, Hwang claimed that his vehicle had not hit the police officer. However, the court of first instance found all charges to be proven, judging from police testimony and CCTV footage, and convicted him on all counts.

Judge Ko stated, "Despite having an extensive criminal record for similar offenses, he repeated the crime again. The nature of the offense is very poor as it caused significant danger without reasonable cause to postal and police officials who were performing their duties on behalf of the public."
