Business Agreement to Enhance Railway Infrastructure Safety and Maintenance Efficiency
Joint Research and Technological Exchange Utilizing AI and Big Data
The Korea Railroad Research Institute has joined forces with the Italian railway specialist firm MerMec to develop next-generation smart railway maintenance technologies utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and big data.
On the 23rd (local time), the Korea Railroad Research Institute announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the MerMec headquarters in Monopoli, Apulia, Italy, to enhance the safety and efficiency of railway infrastructure maintenance.

View original imageUnder this agreement, the two organizations will cooperate in a variety of areas including the development of AI-based smart railway maintenance technology, international joint research, hosting technical seminars and workshops, and providing technical consulting for the advancement of the railway industry. During the technical seminar held after the signing of the MOU, participants shared the latest trends in smart railway maintenance and infrastructure monitoring technologies and discussed strategies for strategic collaboration.
Recently, the field of railway maintenance has rapidly shifted from periodic inspection methods to smart maintenance systems that utilize real-time data for predicting facility status and enabling proactive responses.
The Korea Railroad Research Institute has been developing technology for analyzing vehicle-track interactions and machine-learning-based algorithms for track condition diagnosis, advancing Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) technologies. The two organizations plan to jointly develop predictive maintenance models applicable to various operating environments by combining MerMec's extensive on-site inspection data with the Institute's AI-based analytical technologies.
