Wolsong Unit 3 Resumes Power Generation After 299 Days of Scheduled Preventive Maintenance
The Wolsong Nuclear Power Site under Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power announced on July 23, 2026, that Unit 3 of the Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant, located in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province (pressurized heavy water reactor, 700,000 kW class), had resumed power generation after completing approximately 299 days of scheduled preventive maintenance.
Wolsong Unit 3 began power generation at 11:19 a.m. on July 22, 2026, and reached normal operating output at 4:15 p.m. on July 23, 2026.
The Wolsong Nuclear Power Site carried out its 22nd scheduled preventive maintenance from September 26, 2025. During this period, safety-related support issues were addressed, inspections of turbine building integrity, major equipment maintenance, and facility upgrades were conducted.
Typically, scheduled preventive maintenance takes about two to three months. However, this maintenance period was prolonged after it was discovered that some pipe supports (brackets) had been installed differently from the design drawings.
The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power found that out of 7,904 safety-related supports, 637 did not match the designed specifications. Of these, 539 were determined to have no safety issues, and the remaining 98 were repaired.
A Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant official stated, "As a result of conducting regular inspections of 94 items according to the Nuclear Safety Act, we have confirmed that the safety and reliability of the reactor and related facilities meet licensing criteria."
