Customized Color Design Applied to High-Traffic Areas for Workers
Enhanced Accident Prevention with Photoluminescent and Anti-Slip Coatings
KCC announced on July 23 that it has improved the work environment at the CJ CheilJedang Busan Plant by implementing a customized color environment that allows workers to easily identify movement paths and hazardous routes.
This safety environment improvement was carried out as part of the "Business agreement (MOU) for Color Environment Design Improvement" signed between KCC and CJ CheilJedang last year. The two companies jointly researched a Color Universal Design (CUD) manual and, for the first time in the food industry, applied it to the Busan plant to establish a safety culture at CJ CheilJedang’s worksites.
CUD is a design technique that systematically configures color, brightness, and saturation so that individuals with color vision deficiencies or poor eyesight can intuitively understand spatial and object information. The KCC Color Design Center, together with CJ CheilJedang, analyzed the work environment and operational characteristics of the Busan plant and established a safety color system tailored to the site.
CUD was applied to key areas such as the central intersection with heavy worker traffic, pedestrian guidance lines, crosswalks, and emergency escape routes. The contrast in color, brightness, and saturation was enhanced to make movement directions and danger zones immediately distinguishable, and a consistent color system was also applied to safety markings on floors and walls.
KCC reinforced site safety by utilizing high-performance paints, including the photoluminescent coating "Lumisaef," which emits light in darkness, and anti-slip coatings. Through color design, workers can easily recognize routes and hazards, while the functional coatings allow for responses to unanticipated situations such as blackouts and slip accidents.

View original image"Lumisaef" maintains self-illumination for a certain period even when lighting is cut off due to power outages, fires, or flooding, helping to identify emergency exits and evacuation routes. It can contribute to the swift evacuation of workers in emergencies and secure the time needed for an initial response. Lumisaef has also been applied to the Sillim–Bongcheon Tunnel in Seoul, a pilot site for the Seoul Standard Safety Design Manual in which KCC participated.
KCC and CJ CheilJedang plan to gradually expand the implementation of safety color design to other sites based on the results at the Busan plant. Alongside these efforts to improve the safety environment, the Busan plant of CJ CheilJedang earned the highest "P grade" this month in the Process Safety Management (PSM) assessment by the Ministry of Employment and Labor.

A representative of the KCC Color Design Center said, “Color Universal Design is a safety environment design approach that employs scientific color schemes to help users perceive movement paths and hazards more easily and clearly. We plan to continue expanding the use of customized safety design consulting, incorporating fire-resistant, anti-slip, photoluminescent, and high-visibility products to broaden the application of safety environment solutions across various industrial sites.”
