Government to Advance Yongin Semiconductor Complex Power Supply Timeline by 11 Years

Industrial Water Supply to Be Expedited
With Samsung Electronics and SK hynix deciding to move up the completion schedule for their semiconductor fabs in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, the government has announced it will also shorten the power supply timeline for the Yongin industrial complex by 11 years.
The Ministry of Environment stated that Minister Kim Seong-hwan visited the construction site of the Yongin Semiconductor Industrial Complex on July 22 and presented this updated power supply timeline.
For the National Advanced System Semiconductor Industrial Complex, where the Samsung Electronics fab will be located, the first phase will involve upgrading the liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant within the industrial complex and reinforcing the transmission lines connected to surrounding areas by 2030. The second phase, until 2036, will entail increasing the capacity of the existing power grid to supply the required electricity.
Ultimately, the government plans to fully supply all the electricity needs of the complex by mobilizing power generation resources from both the central and Yeongdong regions by 2042. This is 11 years earlier than the previous target year of 2053, according to the Ministry of Environment.
For the general industrial complex, where the SK hynix fab is being constructed, transmission lines connecting the industrial complex to the neighboring power grid will be established by next year, enabling electricity supply starting in 2025.
Subsequently, a combined heat and power (CHP) plant will be built in the complex by 2029 to meet power demand. Any additional demand will be addressed by constructing additional transmission lines by 2031-2032. The government also plans to enhance community acceptance by employing measures such as building the transmission lines alongside roads.

In terms of industrial water supply, the completion date for the ongoing 'Integrated Water Supply Project' will be moved forward. The first stage, which will provide 310,000 tons of water per day, will now be completed in May 2029 instead of the originally planned January 2031. The second stage, aimed at supplying 760,000 tons per day, will be incorporated into the National Waterworks Master Plan, with design work starting later this year and completion scheduled for July 2034.
