Government Launches Development of 'Security AI'... 256 GPUs to Be Provided
Open Call for the Development of a Cybersecurity-Specialized AI Foundation Model
10-Month Support with 256 NVIDIA B200 GPUs
Aiming to Secure Security AI Optimized for Korea
The government is launching the development of an independent artificial intelligence (AI) foundation model specialized in cybersecurity. The aim is to secure a security-focused AI optimized for the domestic environment to respond to increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
On July 22, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that, together with the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA), it will begin an open call for consortia to participate in the "Development of Cybersecurity-Specialized AI Foundation Model" project, with applications accepted until August 21.
The call is open to domestic companies, universities, and research institutes in the AI and cybersecurity sectors. Following an evaluation process, a single team will be selected; the chosen team will receive support of 256 NVIDIA B200 GPUs (32 nodes) for 10 months.
Participants can freely propose aspects such as AI model development methodologies, service demonstration fields, and the number of services provided. Final selection will be made by an evaluation committee comprised of AI and cybersecurity experts, who will comprehensively review technological capabilities, development experience, goal feasibility, marketability, and potential impact.
The government plans to release an interim model five months after the start of the project and determine whether to continue support through staged evaluations. The final results will be verified after a comprehensive assessment.
The AI foundation model to be developed is intended to be open source and will be disseminated throughout the entire domestic cybersecurity ecosystem. Based on the final outcomes, the Ministry of Science and ICT is also considering follow-up support projects starting in 2027.
Ryu Jemyoung, the Second Vice Minister of Science and ICT, stated, "This project is a proactive response to the rapidly changing landscape of AI development and cybersecurity paradigms. We aim to secure a cybersecurity-specialized AI foundation model optimized for Korea and lay the core foundation for an AI-based cybersecurity ecosystem."
