OCI Q2 Operating Profit at 43.3 Billion Won...Back to Black on Petrochemicals and Semiconductor Growth
Strengthening the Semiconductor Materials Business with Wafer Reclamation
Expansion of Conductive Carbon Black Production Completed
OCI announced on the 22nd that, on a consolidated basis, it posted sales of 535 billion won and operating profit of 43.3 billion won in the second quarter of this year, turning to profit compared to the second quarter of last year.
The company explained that profitability recovered significantly due to increased sales volume and prices of petrochemical products driven by expanded customer demand, as well as improved performance in the semiconductor materials business.
The Basic Chemicals division, which includes semiconductor materials, recorded sales of 209.5 billion won and operating profit of 18.1 billion won. Sales volume of major products such as chlor-alkali (CA) and TDI increased, thanks to base effects from the completion of regular maintenance and recovering product demand. In addition, the selling price of TDI rose due to supply disruptions caused by the war between the United States and Iran, further improving profitability.
The Carbon Chemicals division continued its solid performance, reporting sales of 331.5 billion won and operating profit of 31 billion won, as spreads for BTX products widened with strong oil prices.
OCI is entering the semiconductor packaging wafer reclamation business as a new growth engine, thereby diversifying its semiconductor materials portfolio. By acquiring OCI Specialty, the company plans to utilize its existing production infrastructure and push for early commercialization, aiming for completion in the first half of next year.
The company is also achieving results in the high value-added chemical materials sector. OCI has completed the expansion of its conductive carbon black production, a core material used in ultra-high voltage cables, securing an additional annual production capacity of 30,000 tons.
Yusin Kim, Vice Chairman of OCI, stated, "Following the first quarter, OCI continued steady profit growth in the second quarter, driven by an improved market environment for basic chemical products and the growth of the semiconductor materials business. Going forward, we will accelerate investments in advanced materials such as semiconductor packaging wafer reclamation and conductive carbon black to further enhance our business portfolio, while strengthening our growth foundation in line with the expansion of the AI and semiconductor industries."
