Samyang Innochem is set to enter the medical device market, leveraging its eco-friendly bio-based material, "isosorbide."

View original imageOn July 21, Samyang Innochem announced that it had signed a "Bio-based Dental Solution Joint Development Agreement" with Graphy, a company specializing in 3D-printed dental materials, at Graphy's headquarters in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul.
Under the agreement, Samyang Innochem will supply isosorbide and provide material optimization technology, while Graphy will focus on developing and commercializing high-performance dental resin utilizing this material.
There is a growing demand within the medical market for bio-based materials featuring eco-friendliness and biocompatibility. Isosorbide, produced exclusively in Korea by Samyang Innochem, is a corn-derived bio-based material that boasts excellent shrink resistance, transparency, and biocompatibility, enhancing the performance of dental materials. Currently, it is being used for plastics, coatings, adhesives for electric vehicle motor cores, and is also being applied to the development of insulation materials for LNG storage tanks.
The two companies plan to develop bio-based dental materials that can replace conventional petrochemical-based materials and target the global digital dentistry market through this collaboration.

Shim Woonsup, CEO of Graphy, commented, "This agreement marks a meaningful starting point for confirming the potential of next-generation eco-friendly dental materials by combining the technological strengths of both companies," and continued, "We will strengthen our competitiveness in the global digital dentistry market by developing dental materials with an emphasis on safety and sustainability."

Meanwhile, in 2022, Samyang Innochem completed Korea's first and the world's second-largest isosorbide production plant in the Gunsan Free Trade Zone. The plant has an annual production capacity of 15,000 tons, and the company plans to continue expanding this capacity through future facility optimization and expansion.
