Lebanese Government Troops Begin Deployment in Southern Lebanon 'Pilot Zones' Vacated by Israeli Forces
Basic Agreement Brokered by the US
Uncertainty Amid Hezbollah Resistance
Reports have emerged that, under the basic agreement brokered by the United States between Israel and Lebanon, the Lebanese government has begun deploying military troops in 'pilot zones' in southern Lebanon from which Israeli forces have withdrawn.
According to foreign media reports on July 21 (local time), and citing Lebanese security authorities, the Lebanese army entered the village of Zawtar al-Gharbiya in the Nabatieh region in the south on the same day, following the withdrawal of Israeli forces. The Israeli military had officially confirmed the launch of the pilot zone program the previous day, but provided no additional commentary on the troop withdrawal and replacement carried out that day.
The United States-led 'pilot zone' program is being implemented in an effort to curb the influence of the pro-Iranian militant group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and to eliminate security threats to Israel. Under this program, Lebanese government forces secure and maintain public order in areas vacated by Israeli ground forces.
However, the success of the program remains uncertain, as Hezbollah is resisting the initiative, and Israel also does not fully trust the Lebanese military.
