This year, the 7th Island Day celebration will be held from August 6 to August 9 in the Yeosu area, under the theme “Recharge with Romance, Islands.” A wide range of experiential and cultural programs are planned, including interactive exhibitions, island trekking, a puppet show for children, programs involving participation by island residents, and an Island Academic Conference.
In particular, this year’s celebration is also intended to help build excitement ahead of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, which will open on September 5. By drawing visitors to Yeosu for Island Day, the city aims to channel that interest toward the World Island Expo, further elevating its status as Korea’s leading maritime and island tourism city.
Hwang Kiyoun, Deputy Mayor for Administration, stated, “The most important thing is to establish practical policies that allow island residents to live safely without leaving their hometown. By improving residential conditions, expanding medical and daily living services, and supporting youth settlement, we aim to build sustainable islands where anyone would want to live and where young people will return.”
