The Korea University C5ISRT Research Center is a defense technology research organization led by Professor Sukjoong Kang, who has nearly 40 years of experience in defense technology management research. Professor Kang studies all aspects of defense technology management, including the defense acquisition system, command and control systems, and defense security, and has also served as an advisor.
Through this agreement, Naver Cloud will participate in defense projects for the joint development of AI technology tailored to military environments as well as for developing next-generation command and control systems. Specifically, Naver Cloud and Korea University will jointly promote: ▲collaboration at the 'Joint Chiefs of Staff Military-Industry-Academia Cooperation Center,' one of the defense AX hubs; ▲joint implementation of command and control systems using large-scale AI models; and ▲prior research and development of essential technologies required for the 2027 Korean Joint Command and Control System (KCCS) project.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff Military-Industry-Academia Cooperation Center will be established in one of five areas designated by the Ministry of National Defense as key hubs for civil-military AI cooperation using defense data, including Yongsan in Seoul (Joint Chiefs of Staff), Pangyo and Daejeon (Army), Yangjae (Air Force), and Busan (Navy and Marine Corps). AX hubs are planned for all five regions nationwide. Naver Cloud intends to participate with Korea University in building the Joint Chiefs of Staff AX hub, creating a joint research system with the military and focusing on the discovery and demonstration of specialized AI technologies.
In addition, the two sides will jointly conduct research projects to establish shared and standardized defense platforms and jointly operate educational programs to train professionals in defense technology and the defense industry. Leveraging these efforts, they intend to expand business projects in the defense AX sector to a total value of about 20 billion won.
Yoo Won Kim, CEO of Naver Cloud, stated, "Through collaboration with Korea University’s C5ISRT Research Center, which has led national defense research, we aim to broaden our participation in core defense projects and contribute to strengthening South Korea’s AI capabilities in national defense."
