15,000 Units to Be Supplied to the Military by Next Year
The new K17 submachine gun, which will replace the K1A submachine gun that has been in use by the military for over 45 years, is being supplied to the armed forces for the first time.
SNT Motiv announced on the 21st that it has shipped the first mass-produced units of the K17, a 5.56mm submachine gun designed for special operations. The company held a ceremony at its headquarters in Busan on the same day to commemorate the first shipment of mass-produced units.
The K17 was ultimately selected in the "Type 1 Special Operations Submachine Gun Project" promoted by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration. It passed the military’s performance tests and was deemed suitable for combat, and approximately 15,000 units are scheduled to be delivered to the military sequentially from this year through next year.
The new K17 will replace the K1A submachine gun, which has been used by special operations units as well as artillery and tank crew members, armored vehicle drivers, military police, medics, communication soldiers, and company-level commanders.
The K17 was designed with weight and barrel length optimized for a variety of operational environments, such as urban warfare and airborne missions, with enhanced barrel durability. It features a four-sided Picatinny rail that allows the attachment of various optical and tactical equipment, and it is ambidextrous to accommodate left- and right-handed shooters.
In addition, a burst-fire function has been added to improve firing accuracy and ammunition efficiency, and component compatibility with existing firearms has been secured so that the military can utilize its existing maintenance systems.
