On July 20, Law Firm Won announced the launch of its specialized "AI Data Center Team," targeting the data center industry, which has emerged as a key infrastructure in the AI era.
Recently, the spread of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and the growth of cloud services have rapidly increased demand for data centers. However, related business is evolving beyond simple construction projects into complex infrastructure operations that combine securing electricity, site selection, permits and approvals, urban development, financial procurement, tax incentives, and responses to government policies. According to Law Firm Won, regulations pertaining to electricity—such as power grid saturation in the greater Seoul area, power grid impact assessments, and regional differentiated electricity tariffs—have become major risk factors in the market.
The AI Data Center Team plans to provide comprehensive legal services throughout the full life cycle of data center business, with a focus on "electricity, contracts, AI, urban planning, and taxation." Specifically, the team has established an advisory system covering eight areas: site selection and permitting, electricity and grid connections, real estate and urban development, project financing (PF), taxation and incentives, legislation, policy and government affairs, dispute response, and consulting linkage on technology and fire safety.
Law Firm Won noted that existing data center consulting has often been segmented by fields such as law, electricity, facilities, permits, and taxation. The firm aims to integrate risk reviews from each area within a single project framework, offering actionable strategies from the early stages of business. Won will also collaborate with external expert groups such as Defog, a data center infrastructure consulting specialist; Nara Appraisal Corporation; and Hanbaek FNC, a fire safety specialist.
