Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT, Baek Haenghun, discussed strategies to promote the spread of artificial intelligence (AI) ethics and to strengthen global cooperation on AI governance with UNESCO.
According to the Ministry of Science and ICT, on July 20, Deputy Prime Minister Baek attended the launch event for UNESCO’s "AI Ethics Online Course (MOOC)." He also held talks with UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany to discuss ways to cooperate in building a safe and trustworthy AI ecosystem.

Deputy Prime Minister Baek explained that Korea became the first country in the world this year to implement the "Basic Artificial Intelligence Act." He also noted that the nation is revising its 2020 AI ethics standards to adapt to technological advancements and societal changes, evolving them into new AI ethical principles. He expressed Korea’s willingness to share its policy experience in balancing AI innovation and trust with the international community, and emphasized the country's commitment to addressing shared global challenges by establishing a global AI hub.

In his remarks at the AI Ethics Online Course launch event, Deputy Prime Minister Baek stated, "In order to establish a safe and trustworthy AI ecosystem, it is vital for the international community to develop and put shared principles and standards into practice." He added, "The Republic of Korea will work closely with UNESCO to actively contribute to the spread of AI ethics and the creation of a trustworthy AI ecosystem."
