True Black 1400 is a new certification standard announced this month by VESA. To qualify, a display must express black at 0.0005 nits or less while also achieving a peak brightness of 1,400 nits at 10% OPR (the percentage of lit pixels among all pixels comprising the screen). This brightness standard is 40% higher than that of the previous top grade, True Black 1000. Products certified at the True Black 1400 level offer the perfect black representation unique to OLED, as well as significantly enhanced high-brightness performance, providing an outstanding visual experience.
The tandem OLED for laptops developed by Samsung Display achieves a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits at the panel level. This is more than 40% higher than the maximum brightness of 1,100 nits offered by conventional single-emission-layer structure OLEDs (single-stack OLEDs), making it the brightest among currently commercialized OLEDs for laptops.
This product utilizes a tandem OLED structure with two layers of organic emission material, allowing it to deliver both higher brightness and longer lifespan. In a tandem OLED, the stacked emission layers emit light together—making it possible to achieve greater brightness at the same current, or to extend the lifespan by reducing load on the emission layers at a given brightness. In fact, at typical laptop display brightness settings, the lifespan of tandem OLEDs is more than twice that of conventional single-emission-layer OLEDs.
Advanced materials technology is also a key factor behind the superior brightness performance. In OLEDs, the efficiency and stability of organic emission materials determine the achievable brightness at a given power and the lifespan at a given brightness. Samsung Display has further enhanced performance by applying new organic materials in its tandem OLEDs.
Samsung Display is currently supplying tandem OLEDs supporting True Black 1400 certification to global PC makers. Lenovo's laptop, the "Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition Gen11 (16-inch)" equipped with these panels, received True Black 1400 certification on July 8. From the second half of this year through next year, major customers including ASUS, Dell Technologies, and MSI also plan to launch products supporting True Black 1400, powered by Samsung Display's panels.
From July 22 to 24, Samsung Display will showcase its laptop tandem OLEDs supporting the True Black 1400 grade at "K-Display 2026 Korea Display Industry Exhibition" at COEX, Seoul. The product will be featured in the "Ultimate Performance Showcase" zone of the Samsung Display booth. The displays will present video content geared toward environments where creators require precise image quality for tasks such as video editing and content inspection, allowing visitors to experience firsthand the superior brightness and image quality of tandem OLEDs.
