Four-Vehicle Collision and Car Fire at Daegwallyeong 4 Tunnel on Yeongdong Expressway
All 16 Occupants Safely Evacuated
At approximately 11:51 a.m. on July 17, a four-vehicle collision occurred at the Daegwallyeong 4 Tunnel on the Yeongdong Expressway toward Gangneung, in Wangsani, Wangsanmyeon, Gangneung, Gangwon Province.
The accident caused a fire to break out in a Santa Fe vehicle inside the tunnel. There were a total of 16 people in the four vehicles involved in the accident, and all of them reportedly evacuated to outside the tunnel.
The fire department issued a “Level 1 Emergency Response” 30 minutes after the fire started. Ten minutes later, the response was upgraded to “Level 2 Emergency Response,” and 15 pieces of equipment and 53 personnel were mobilized to conduct firefighting operations.

Heavy smoke spread inside the tunnel, at one point making it difficult for firefighters to enter. As a result of the accident, traffic congestion occurred in the surrounding area.
