Chunghee Kang, Former President of Korea Public Tissue Bank, Appointed as New Head of National Health Insurance Service
Physician and Former Chairman of the Democratic Party's Special Committee on Healthcare Policy
The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on the 17th that it will appoint Chunghee Kang, former President of the Korea Public Tissue Bank, as the 11th President of the National Health Insurance Service. The term of office will be three years starting from July 20, 2026.
The newly appointed President Kang is a thoracic surgeon who graduated from the Yonsei University College of Medicine. He has previously served as Vice President of the Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Executive Vice President of the Korean Medical Association, Director of Public Health for Giheung-gu in Yongin City, Executive Director of Benefits at the National Health Insurance Service, President of the Korea Public Tissue Bank, and Chairman of the Special Committee on Healthcare Policy of the Democratic Party of Korea.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare expressed expectations that President Kang, with his expertise and policy experience accumulated in the medical field, will smoothly carry out key tasks such as managing the finances of the National Health Insurance, overseeing the benefits and integrated care of the National Health Insurance and the Long-term Care Insurance for Older Persons, as well as strengthening regional, essential, and public healthcare services, and advancing the government's major healthcare policies aimed at ensuring a sustainable healthcare system.

The President of the National Health Insurance Service is appointed through a process in which the Corporation’s Executive Recommendation Committee nominates a candidate, the Minister of Health and Welfare recommends the nominee, and the final appointment is made by the President of the Republic of Korea.
