Suspected Food Poisoning Reports in Jeju Near Last Year's Levels... Urgent Measures Needed Ahead of Tourist Season
Nearly Reaching Last Year’s Total by End of May
Heightened Outbreak Risk with Monsoons and Heatwaves
Authorities: “Intensified Hygiene Inspections with Expanded Targets”
With the number of reported suspected food poisoning cases and patients in the Jeju region surging to nearly the annual total of last year even before the peak summer tourist season, a red alert has been triggered regarding food safety for both residents and tourists. As unusually intense heatwaves and the arrival of the monsoon season further heighten concerns over additional outbreaks, there is an urgent need for relevant authorities to establish proactive and effective hygiene measures.
Amid growing concerns about the outbreak of Salmonella food poisoning in the Jeju region due to this summer's hot and humid heatwaves and rainy season climate, a food poisoning prevention guideline illustrating precautions for major complex prepared foods such as gimbap and rolled omelets, as well as Jeju Provincial Government’s plan to expand on-site hygiene inspection targets. This figure is close to the entire total for 2025 in Jeju (18 cases, 317 patients), and reflects a dramatic increase of more than 68% in patient numbers compared to the same period in 2024 (15 cases, 203 patients).
By month, 103 patients were recorded in March and 132 in May, with the sharp rise in May being significantly influenced by mass suspected food poisoning symptoms among high school students from other regions who visited Jeju for school trips.
Moreover, the heatwaves and hot, humid climate since the beginning of July are accelerating the propagation of food poisoning bacteria such as Salmonella, raising the risk of a widespread outbreak.
Salmonella is mainly transmitted through egg-based dishes like rolled omelets and egg sheets, as well as complex prepared foods such as gimbap and lunch boxes. Recently, a cluster of suspected food poisoning cases was reported at a well-known gimbap chain in the region, prompting health authorities to launch an emergency epidemiological investigation. This has sparked growing concerns that on-site sanitation practices have already reached a critical point.
This surge in suspected food poisoning cases is directly linked to the reputation of Jeju's clean tourism brand as the island prepares to welcome a large influx of summer vacationers. As a result, it is imperative to swiftly implement strong physical hygiene regulations and crackdowns, going beyond basic preventive publicity.
Given that it takes several months to receive the final results from detailed epidemiological investigations, simply adopting a wait-and-see approach is inadequate now that food safety risks in Jeju have risen so significantly. This situation requires heightened vigilance from consumers, as well as much tighter hygiene monitoring and meaningful on-site enforcement by relevant administrative authorities.
Meanwhile, Jeju health authorities emphasized that the current statistics are based on 'suspected reports' and are not the final confirmed numbers, noting that comprehensive analysis and time-consuming investigation and test results from public health centers are still needed for each individual case. Nevertheless, they stressed that every possible effort is being made to prevent the spread of food poisoning during the summer season.

An official stated, “We are taking the upward trend in suspected reports through May very seriously and have greatly expanded the number of business establishments subject to hygiene inspections compared to previous years and last year's plan, intensifying crackdowns. In addition to regular inspections conducted in the first and second halves of the year, we have issued plans for additional special hygiene checks at group catering facilities, and have made formal requests to restaurant-related associations in the province to strengthen voluntary supervision, focusing on activating a proactive disease control network.”
