Jeong Jeongsik on Kwon Seongdong’s Two-Year Sentence: “Convicting the Opposition, Acquitting the Ruling Party Will Be Judged by History”
Jeong Jeomsik, Floor Leader of the People Power Party, commented on July 16 regarding the Supreme Court's two-year prison sentence for Assemblyman Kwon Seongdong over the alleged illegal political funds from the Unification Church, stating, "From the Min Junggi Special Prosecutor, to the Three Major Special Prosecutions, and the Comprehensive Special Prosecution, opposition politicians being convicted, ruling party politicians being acquitted, oppression of the opposition, and biased investigations will inevitably face judgment by history."

View original imageOn the morning of July 16 at the National Assembly, Floor Leader Jeong met with reporters and expressed, "I felt truly distressed upon hearing the news of Assemblyman Kwon's two-year prison sentence and loss of parliamentary seat. We humbly accept the Supreme Court's ruling," he said.
Floor Leader Jeong stated, "This case began with an investigation by a special prosecutor," and continued, "Special Prosecutor Min Junggi overlooked the allegations of bribe-taking from the Unification Church involving Busan Mayor Jeon Jae-soo, letting the statute of limitations expire, and investigated only testimonies related to opposition politicians."

He then addressed the Supreme Court, asserting, "If trials against opposition politicians are handled swiftly, while the trials of the highest authority (President Lee Jaemyung) are endlessly delayed, the judiciary cannot earn the people's trust," and requested, "The Supreme Court should make efforts to promptly resume the five pending trials involving the highest authority."
