Shaken Trust in Geochang County Council: Chairperson Pyo Jusook Chooses "Law and Principles"
Geochang County Council's Integrity and Self-Correcting Ability in the Spotlight
after Assemblyman Referred to Prosecution
With an assemblyman from the Geochang County Council in Gyeongnam under prosecution for alleged violation of the Conflict of Interest Prevention Act, there is growing sentiment that the council's response will be a critical turning point in restoring public trust among county residents.
The complaint claims that the assemblyman was involved in private interests and government contracts related to official duties. The veracity of these allegations will ultimately be determined by investigative authorities.

Chairperson Pyo emphasized, "As the representative body of the county residents, integrity and fairness are paramount for the council," adding, "We will monitor the outcome of the investigation and review necessary measures in line with relevant laws and council regulations."
This issue is expected to serve as an assessment not only of an individual assemblyman's conduct but also of the ethics and self-correcting capabilities of local councils as a whole. The Conflict of Interest Prevention Act was enacted to prevent a public official's private interests from influencing official judgment during duty performance, and local assembly members are also subject to its provisions.
Within the local community, there is increasing demand for the council to demonstrate adherence to law and principles above political interests. Additionally, some believe the council must proactively improve its own ethical standards and institutional frameworks regardless of the investigation's findings.
One local resident stated, "What the people want is not the protection or targeting of certain individuals, but fair and impartial procedures," adding, "The council should use transparent measures to make this an opportunity to regain public trust."
