Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi Province, led by Mayor Park Seungwon, has officially launched a green remodeling project to transform the Gwangmyeong Disabled Comprehensive Welfare Center, which has been in operation for more than 25 years, into an eco-friendly public building. The plan is to reduce energy consumption by roughly 30%, while also enhancing user safety and convenience, thereby implementing carbon neutrality policies in day-to-day operations.

The project will invest a total of KRW 4.25 billion, including KRW 3.357 billion in national and provincial funding that was secured after being selected for the Green Remodeling for Public Buildings contest held by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The welfare center, which was built more than 25 years ago, currently suffers from deteriorated insulation performance and outdated facilities. The city has focused the project on significantly improving the building's energy efficiency and upgrading the user environment.
The key components of the project include reinforcing the exterior walls with high-performance insulation, replacing windows and doors with high-efficiency models, applying a cool roof system to reduce rooftop heat absorption, installing heat recovery ventilation systems, and upgrading heating and cooling systems to high-efficiency equipment. Through these measures, the city expects to reduce energy consumption for the building by about 30%.
In addition, safety facilities such as a new sprinkler system will be installed to further improve the safety of welfare center users.
The city aims to complete the design by December of this year, begin construction in February next year, and finish the project by December of the same year. To minimize inconvenience, a phased construction schedule will be implemented so that operation of the welfare center is not suspended during construction.
Mayor Park Seungwon stated, "I hope this remodeling will allow welfare center users to access services in an even safer and more pleasant environment. We will continue to improve the energy performance of public buildings to achieve carbon neutrality, while also building a sustainable city that enhances the quality of life for our citizens."
