Paularin Balogun, the US national soccer team forward who became the center of controversy due to the unprecedented suspension deferral at the 2026 North and Central America World Cup, has expressed his stance on the reversal of his disciplinary action. On July 15, Yonhap News reported that Balogun, in an interview with CBS, revealed that he anticipated significant repercussions when he learned about the deferral of his suspension.
Specifically, Balogun stated, "At first, I was happy to return to the team as my suspension was deferred, but upon reflection, I realized a huge controversy would erupt.” He added, “Since it was such an unusual situation, there was a sense of tension even among my teammates.” He continued, “As the match drew closer, I tried to focus as much as possible, but it was difficult to avoid the noise from outside. My teammates reassured me like brothers, and at the time, there was nothing I could do or change."
Balogun, who scored three goals during the group stage and led the US to the Round of 16, stepped on Tarik Muharemovic’s ankle during a ball contest in the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The referee then conducted an on-field video review (VAR), and Balogun was given a straight red card, making him ineligible for the Round of 16. However, after US President Donald Trump spoke with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, FIFA reversed its decision and deferred Balogun’s one-match suspension for one year.
Balogun reflected, "I was confused as the team was training without me, and I was focusing on boosting the team’s morale. When I learned about my eligibility to play while on the team bus to the training ground, all of my teammates cheered and shouted for joy." However, in the Round of 16 against Belgium, where Balogun started as the striker, he managed a total of three shots (one on target) and failed to score, with the US suffering a 1-4 defeat to end their World Cup run.
However, Balogun was clear that the external controversy did not affect the team’s performance. He explained, "As professionals, we completely separated our emotions from the tasks at hand. After overcoming the initial surprise of the announcement that I could return to the team, it wasn't difficult to distinguish my feelings from my work." He went on to say, "Some may think that the heavy defeat against Belgium was a sign that we weren’t fully focused, but having observed our preparations within the camp, I know for certain that we were totally focused ahead of the match."

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the decision to defer the suspension of US national soccer team forward Paularin Balogun, who has been at the center of a favoritism controversy, was made solely by the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee. It has also been revealed that the other 17 disciplinary committee members, including the vice chairman, were not even asked to participate in the review process, intensifying the backlash. FIFA Disciplinary Committee Chairman Mohammad Alkhamali remained silent when asked by the media to explain the circumstances of the solo decision and suspicions of external pressure, and he declined to answer whether he had received a request for the deferral from FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
