GM Korea Labor-Management Talks Fail...Partial Strike Begins Tomorrow
Four-Hour Strikes by Each Shift on July 15 and 16
The labor union of GM Korea will stage a partial strike over two days, July 15 and 16.
On July 14, GM Korea's management and labor held their 14th round of wage and collective bargaining negotiations in the afternoon. However, as they failed to reach an agreement, the union decided to carry out a partial strike. The union plans for the first shift, second shift, and day shift to each go on strike for four hours per day on July 15 and 16.
In addition, following the guidelines of the Korean Metal Workers’ Union, the union will participate in the general strike organized by the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) scheduled to take place around Gwanghwamun, Seoul, on July 15.
Previously, the Central Labor Relations Commission ruled on July 6 to suspend mediation in the dispute. Having secured the right to strike, the union has since pressured management by refusing early shifts, overtime, and special work assignments starting the day before.
