President Lee Sends Condolence Letter on Passing of Former Qatari Emir... Chief Secretary Kang Named Special Envoy (Comprehensive)
Kang Hoon-sik: "I Will Faithfully Carry Out My Duties to Deepen Friendship and Cooperation Between the Two Countries"
On July 14, the Blue House announced that President Lee Jae-myung has sent a message of condolence following the passing of the former Emir of Qatar and has appointed Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik as a special envoy to attend the funeral on behalf of the president.
In the past, the South Korean government has dispatched Cabinet members or National Assembly members as condolence envoys upon the passing of Gulf state monarchs. The Blue House explained, "Since the Qatari side specifically requested Chief Kang as the condolence envoy, he will be visiting in that capacity." Kang is scheduled to depart for Qatar on this day and will return to Korea on the 16th after completing the condolence itinerary.
Former Emir Hamad seized power in 1995 by overthrowing his father in a coup and ruled Qatar until 2013. He is credited with modernizing Qatar, including the establishment of the Al Jazeera network and hosting the 2022 World Cup. After 18 years in power, he abdicated in favor of his son, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in 2013.

Regarding the Qatari government's request for his visit, Kang noted, "I take it as a sign of empathy for the sincere spirit of collaboration demonstrated by the Lee administration and as an expression of Qatar's deep trust in the Republic of Korea."
