Flight Delayed Over an Hour After 3-Year-Old's Disruption... Online Debate Flares Over 'No-Kids Flights'

Demand Grows for "Adults-Only Flights" Even at Extra Cost
Concerns Raised Over Child Discrimination and Rights Infringement
A flight was delayed for over an hour and a family was forced to disembark after a three-year-old child and their parents became uncontrollable in the cabin just before takeoff. This incident has sparked a growing debate about the extent of parental responsibility for unpredictable behavior of infants and toddlers on flights, as well as about the introduction of ‘no-kids tickets.’
On July 12 (local time), the New York Post reported that on a recent passenger flight departing from Sweden, a three-year-old child who had been assigned a seat refused to sit down, causing a commotion, and the entire family was ordered off the plane at the direction of the crew.
The crew gave the parents about ten minutes to get the child seated, but it was unsuccessful. In the end, for safety reasons, the airline required the family to disembark. According to regulations at the time, a three-year-old could not fly sitting on a parent’s lap.
As a result of this incident, the aircraft had to be refueled, the weight balance of the plane had to be readjusted, and the checked luggage of the disembarked passengers had to be offloaded. This caused the flight to arrive more than one hour behind schedule.
"Irresponsible Parents" vs. "Impossible to Control Children": Heated Debate on 'No-Kids Flights'
The case spread quickly through the international online community Reddit, where it attracted hundreds of comments and fueled a heated debate among users.
One user, who identified themselves as a passenger on the flight, shared, "It was a Friday night and I just wanted to get home quickly, but because of these irresponsible parents and their child, I missed my connecting flight and my entire schedule was disrupted. I would pay extra to fly on adults-only flights."
Some users who agreed said, "It's not the child, but the parenting that's the issue," and, "Regardless of age, any passenger who causes a takeoff delay of more than ten minutes should be removed immediately," voicing support for the airline's decision.
On the other hand, users with parenting experience defended the parents, arguing that it is impossible to perfectly control the behavior of infants and toddlers.
One user responded, "Even the most experienced parents can’t control a child having a meltdown at certain moments," and added, "The parents, who had to try to force their terrified, crying child into a seat while under the gaze of others, must have also felt deep humiliation and frustration."

Within the airline industry both in Korea and internationally, there have been attempts, mainly among some foreign airlines, to create adults-only sections or adults-only flights. However, the debate continues over whether such practices constitute discrimination against children and infringement of their rights.
