The city emphasized the need for the prompt advancement of the project and reaffirmed its commitment to cooperation with relevant local governments and the National Assembly.
The forum was attended by over 400 participants, including local members of the National Assembly, officials from seven local governments (Hwaseong, Gwangju, Yongin, Anseong, Cheongju, Jincheon County, and others), as well as representatives from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, academia, research institutes, and civic organizations.
In his congratulatory remarks, Mayor Jeong stated, "Although the Central Region Express Train was included in the 4th National Rail Network Construction Plan, its progress has been somewhat delayed. However, as the project to connect Jamsil and Cheongju as a metropolitan express line has regained momentum, I hope that its implementation will proceed as soon as possible."
He went on to say, "Since the branch line connecting to Dongtan Station is also being promoted, Hwaseong Special City deeply agrees with the necessity of this project and strongly supports it. I would like to thank the National Assembly members and related organizations for their efforts to advance this project, and we will continue to work closely with the relevant local governments to ensure that the project proceeds rapidly."
Mayor Jeong also emphasized, "I hope that the ongoing administrative procedures, such as the private investment eligibility review, will be completed without delay so that citizens can benefit from metropolitan rail services as soon as possible."
Hwaseong City expects that the JTX will serve as a core metropolitan transportation axis connecting the Seoul Capital Area and the central inland region, going beyond the construction of a simple railway. In particular, as the demand for metropolitan transportation continues to increase around Dongtan, the city anticipates that connecting Dongtan Station will significantly improve citizens' mobility, expand the metropolitan living area, and stimulate industrial and economic activity.
The Central Region Express Train is a 134-kilometer route connecting Jamsil, Seongnam, Gwangju, Yongin, Anseong, Jincheon, and Cheongju, with a total project cost estimated at approximately 9 trillion won. Hwaseong aims to maximize the effectiveness of the project through its connection to Dongtan Station.
This project was proposed as a private-sector initiative to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport by Hyundai Engineering & Construction in 2024, followed by a private investment eligibility review by the Korea Development Institute (KDI) in 2025. The results of this review are expected to be released in the second half of this year.
