With Typhoon Bavi, the ninth typhoon of the season, approaching from the south and a heatwave occurring simultaneously, Gimpo City in Gyeonggi Province has raised its disaster response level. The city reviewed current weather conditions and countermeasures for each sector. During the meeting, officials shared information on the path of Typhoon Bavi and the heatwave outlook, focusing on strategies to minimize damage to citizens caused by natural disasters during the summer.
The city decided to reinforce its preparedness for typhoons by addressing vulnerabilities revealed during the recent period of heavy rainfall. Authorities will intensively inspect major road storm drains for blockages caused by fallen leaves and garbage, and will also examine the drainage management status at large construction sites. In addition, the city plans to strengthen advance inspections and operational checks at facilities vulnerable to flooding, such as road storm drains, riverside walking paths, underpasses, and drainage pumping stations.
Measures to counter the heatwave are also being enhanced. The city will expand welfare worker wellness checks for vulnerable groups such as elderly people living alone, from the previous schedule of one visit and two phone calls per week, to at least one phone call or visit every day. Gimpo City will encourage outdoor construction workers, foreign workers, and migrant laborers to refrain from working during peak heat hours. Preventive actions will also include recommending that farm work in rice paddies, fields, livestock barns, and greenhouses be suspended, and advising against holding outdoor sports and cultural events.
Mayor Lee stated, "As strong winds and heavy rain are expected due to the indirect effects of Typhoon Bavi, on-site monitoring should be further strengthened and thorough measures must be taken to prevent flooding and damage to facilities."
He added, "Disaster response is not the responsibility of a single department, but a task that requires the efforts of the entire city. Please focus all administrative resources on minimizing damage to citizens, paying particular attention to the safety of vulnerable groups such as the elderly and people with disabilities."

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Typhoon Bavi made landfall off the southern coast of Shanghai, China, on July 12 and is expected to weaken into an extratropical cyclone in the early hours of July 14. However, heavy rainfall is forecast for central regions, necessitating thorough preparation. Gimpo City has been under a heatwave advisory since July 10, and the Korea Meteorological Administration predicts that the heatwave will continue for some time even after the rain.
